VFX: Text Messages

For the text messages in Maker of Men I decided to go with a clean Sherlock-esque style. I tried a variety of styles with boxes around them and different colours but ultimately I always came back to just the text.

This came back to the Every Frame a Painting video. The box around the text becomes dated and the colours is sort of spoon feeding the audience and holding their hand. Designing the font to look good and stay consistent brings the audience into the scene more. Also keeping things consistent is important to keep order and style across the film in general.

To add a slight twist on the formula so to not just completely copy Sherlock's style, I tracked the text to the device being used to communicate and also positioned the text in 3D space with a subtle blur to hint at depth.

Message 2:

As you can see there is a constant style throughout the film. These are the two texts in the piece. They both share the same font and style with depth. I think that the style really suits the film. It is subdued and clean which are two things that are present within the film. It also doesn't do too much to grab attention from the frame. They just display information in a clean and concise fashion.

They are tracked to the device also to add a little interest to the scene. Also the whole film was shot handheld on a shoulder rig and so there was a natural movement and sway to every shot. Tracking the text to the phone actually helps it blend into the scene. When it wasn't tracked it looks completely out of place and tracking it into the room separated from everything else looked too showy. Tracking it to the phone makes sense within logical thought as it shows where the message is emanating from and still anchors the text within the scene.
