The montage scene was interesting to grade because it is a pivotal part of the film. It shows the bond blossoming between the two main characters. It also shows the main protagonist coming out of his shell and finding himself. To express this I wanted to really differentiate these shots from the other shots in the piece so far.
To really make this clear I really accentuated all the colours and allowed through quite a lot of saturation to make them all pop. This really makes this scene feel brand new and a stark change from the scenes proceeding it.
There is a lot more saturation that has previously been seen overall in all of these scenes. There is a lot more colour in the skin tones and all the prominent colours in each scene (particularly in the arcade portion of the montage) have been left virtually untouched to really make those shots vibrant and bring them to life.
The colour palette is obviously still muted somewhat to make the scene fit within the established parameters somewhat but in comparison to the other scenes in the film these shots have a lot of colour in them and this adds a lot of life.
They are also all set in natural locations with realistic lighting to show that the characters are completely comfortable however, the inclusion of more colour and bolder elements in the frame really help to show the protagonist coming out of his shell and experiencing new elements.
