The first act of the film is when we are introduced to the characters and the status quo. The protagonist is an introverted 20-something. His life is growing stale falling heavily into routine. He isn't satisfied with how things are going and when he receives a text to attend a party he begrudgingly accepts if for nothing more than to escape the monotony. This is reflected by the colour in the scene:
The colours in the scene are really muted. There is a hint of blue and yellow but they are very subdued. This reflects the characters belief that his surroundings have become stale. There is nothing that really stands out or grabs the eye it is fairly bland and lifeless. However, when he enters the party the colour space shifts drastically.
There is a sudden influx of colour. The yellow in this scene is very ever-present and floods the scene. This highlights a drastic change in environment that is very different to where we have seen the character before. His uncomfortableness throughout the scene shows he isn't used to the surroundings and the brightness of the colour highlights that it is alien to him.
This colour is continued throughout the party scene and is used to highlight the introduction of the other main character. As you can see the source of the light is placed directly behind her head and that is where the yellow colour is emanating from. This shows that she is a new element to the character and that she is creating a feeling of change and that she represents a drastic new break from his monotony.
The colour yellow continues throughout the whole of this scene however, once this character is introduced and becomes part of the protagonists life within the party environment the yellow gets more and more subdued.
As you can see in the shot above the yellow is massively subdued which hints that the environment is still new and alien but that his connection to the new character has helped him acclimatise to his surroundings and really embrace them. He is more comfortable and loosing himself thanks to her.
