Colour: Act 3

This is where everything is explained and a resolution is achieved. This called for the colour to stabilise. The questions are answered and the characters are reunited. The colour begins to stabilise along with these events.

Throughout the bedroom scene there is still quite a lot green present in the shots however, other colours are strongly introduced. Namely the blue plays a prominent role in the scene showing that along with the reuniting of these two characters colour is included.

The colour is still unsettling though because the truth carries quite a lot of uncertainty with it. The protagonist is unsure as to what to make of everything still and so the colour reflects that with the green overtone persisting but the darkness being lifted shows he is somewhat at ease with the situation.

As he is angry and leaves the house the green fades slightly and the image lights up a little more to reflect the explanation of the events presenting some amount of clarity.

The ending of the film set on the seafront is the clearest and lightest of the shots in act three which represents and accentuates the resolution found by the characters. However, it was an important detail to leave some amount of green still in the shot to show that there is a new equilibrium present and that things will never go back to how they were.

Conclusion:

The colour was a highly important aspect to this film. As I mentioned it was a great process as it was mainly just accentuating and highlighting what was already there due to the DOP having done such a good job to start with.

I worked closely with Jamie to ensure that every scene carried with it the correct emotions and feelings as he envisioned when shooting. He had a very clear vision and so luckily this was a very painless process.

I think overall the colour really adds to the piece. It really adds a layer of emotion and feeling to every scene and helps to convey the emotions and ideas that go along with each moment subconsciously to the viewer.

The subtler effects and additions such as the sharpening and contrast additions really helped to make the images pop and be more aesthetically pleasing overall too. They can quite easily go unnoticed as they are subtle but they really are like night and day compared to the raw image and they add a great deal of clarity and vibrance to the images.
