Artist Research: Gustavo Santaolalla

This man composes music for a living and has worked on a huge number of massively successful films in the past including Brokeback Mountain, Babel and Into the Wild along with many, many more. I first came into contact with his work however, through his work on The Last of Us. That game is an absolute masterpiece and for me one of the major things that has stuck with me after playing it is the soundtrack. Gustavo composed the entire soundtrack and it is mesmerising.

He has such a unique style that is packed with so much emotion and meaning. Every note has a story to tell. His work is my favourite in the film and video game composition scene. Everything he does is brilliant. His style of storytelling through song is something that inspires me hugely. Having a guitar do something akin to what a singer would do on a song is something that I really try to incorporate into my style.

Instead of having a typical solo over something and using scales and traditional timing Gustavo instead utalises strange ideas with effects and sounds that are pretty untraditional. Everything has a very pure, raw and ancient feel. It sounds like something you'd hear on the streets of a strange foreign city a few decades ago. Yet it is made contemporary with some more modern ideals.

His style is something I draw from heavily when composing. Here is one of his songs for reference:
