Artist Research: City and Colour

City and Colour was one of the first bands/artists I listened to that wasn't part of the heavy rock genre. The lead singer, Dallas Green, is part of the band Alexisonfire which is a far heavier rock group which is my favourite band from the genre. So after looking into him further I found his side project which is this band.

It is a folksy effort that draws heavily from the blues and from his rock past. His music is very deep, haunting and soulful. These elements made every song have a really strong emotional impact. That coupled with the lyrics made for a deeply engaging artist.

It is these elements that will really work well in a composition for this film. The really simple yet full chords with subtle embellishments make for a really interesting sonic backdrop for some really soft and powerful lead/vocal ideas. Also he uses a lot of reverb on everything to make it sound distant and yet present. I really like this idea as it makes everything feel enormous and hugely powerful. His approach to building the structure of a song as well is one of my favourites I've heard.

For reference here is one of his songs. Notice the simple chords with subtle embellishments that really add life to the chord progression and make for a haunting style.
