Artist Research: John Mayer

John Mayer is a pretty recent discovery for me. I'd always heard the name floating around but never actually gone to check out any music of his. Just less than a year ago however, I pulled the trigger and listened to a few of his songs and they blew me away. His use of the guitar is sheer genius to me. Obviously he is utilising styles popularised by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix and BB King but the way that he in particular blends those styles together is astoundingly good.

This style of the blues is really appealing to me. And how he uses the dynamics of the guitar are amazing. He can go from the softest little melody to a screaming run in a matter of seconds in one solo and it sounds completely organic and oh so musical.

His style is something that lends itself very well to this project I think as James Bay has a similar aura around his playing and as I've mentioned his song is the one that fit best into the montage section.

Here is one of the songs that has the elements most closely related to elements I wish to employ for my composition. The main riff throughout the verses and chorus is really soft and interesting but in particular the solo (starting at 2:34) is very bluesy and emotive whilst staying very soft and melodic:
