The Edit

Now this is a tricky thing to blog about. The edit has been completed already. I didn't really feel it nesasery to blog too extensively about the actual editing process itself as I have edited for years now and so editing itself isn't anything that revolutionary for me.

The editing on this project did take time though. More so than any project I have done before. There was a lot more time to fill this time around and some technical parts. I carried out all the editing for the film with Jamie by my side to approve everything. I handled all the placement and timings of the shots.

That was the main difference between our projects though. In all of our previous projects as I have already mentioned we are both there on set thinking about the set and then the edit is more of a coalition where we both have a vision and we work together to get something we are both happy with. With this project however, there were clearer set rules. Jamie was the director and me the editor. This meant that I couldn't take as many liberated or experiment as much as it wasn't my project to control. Everything I did or suggested had to adhere to Jamie's vision and plan.

That doesn't mean that I didn't have any input or changes. I felt as though I did actually quite drastically change the course for the edit over the time I was editing it. Making some quite drastic changes to the series of events and overall feeling. Although all the while running it by Jamie to make sure it's what he wants for the project and something he approves.

That was the main difference though I feel. Just making sure I was editing for the sensibilities of someone else rather than just editing for myself. The actual editing itself though was pretty straight forward. Editing is editing. It's all about shaping the feel for the project and making everything work. In that sense it was a success. It was time consuming but successful.

The edit was always the most comfortable section to focus on for me. Now that it is done though I can move onto some of the other more exciting sections.
