Sound Design

Sound design is one of my new passions in the film world. I love going around with my audio recorder and trying to manufacture sounds to fit with a scene. I love the creativity and thinking outside the box that has to take place to make something work and when it comes together the sounds can really shine. This project allowed me to explore that in great depth which was great. I have been editing the shots I got yesterday and got to a point where I had a final cut (it was just missing some visual tweaks and effects). And so next on the to-do list was gather sound assets to use.

This was a fairly straight forward process as I was dealing with physical, repeatable actions. There were no sounds to fabricate that were other worldly or unobtainable I was merely replicating natural sounds from natural objects. And so I set up a desk in my lounge (one of the quietest rooms in my house) and started to record sound and I think that they all came out really nicely.

To mix them I am using Adobe Audition which is an industry standard audio editor with some really powerful features. One of the most useful features is the ability to edit audio to video. I can open my final cut inside of Audition and watch it along in real time and see how the sounds work. Whats beneficial about this is that it allows far more flexibility and control over the sounds than Premiere Pro or After Effects does and I can still see the video whilst I edit. This allows for a far superior final audio result and it is far easier and quicker for me to work. I really enjoyed the process.

I will incorporate them into the edit and add some finishing touches then embed it in my next blog post so they can be heard then.
