Ident Inspiration

Whilst exploring the tea ident I mentioned in the last post I started drawing parallels between it and the opening title sequence for the American TV show Dexter. This show shares a lot of the same principles as the Rule Britannia series.

It is about a serial killer who works in the Miami police forensic department. He is a loveable character who only kills criminals, specialising in other murderers. The series has a really darkly comic undertone throughout whilst maintaining a predominant theme of murder, gore and suspense.

This duality really works to bring the series to life and make every moment stellar. The laughs and smiles makes the dark, serious moments all the more powerful. Contrarily the darker moments really make the humour and light hearted moments shine and provide palpable relief.

All of these factors are summarised perfectly by this title sequence. It shows the main character crying out his daily morning routine but shoots it in a very ambiguous, mysterious and misleading manor. Showing that there is a hidden agenda in every action and that their are dark thought harbouring within. Each shot is a bait and switch setting up one action then showing another. It works perfectly and summarises the whole show in just a few seconds. It really is one of the best title sequences in any dramatic TV series of late.

As may have already become apparent then, this series and the Rule Britannia series share many common themes. I wasn't thinking of the dexter series when I thought up the idea for my ident it was only later I realised the similarities. I think that whilst the Dexter theme is a very structured and punchy sequence that almost works to a set beat and tempo. The vision I have for my sequence was more of an overall texture. No real setup and payoff. More of an overall feeling and uncertainty leading to one big reveal. There are certainly parallels drawn between the two however, and I shall be drawing from the series' title sequence quite heavily when shooting my sequence.
