Changes pt.II

This is the post where I address my decisions regarding the call to action. Now, I have decided not to change anything which may be a controversial decision. However, I feel strongly about how it is at the moment and I think that it works better for the grand, overall goal I had in mind at the start of the project. This is my final homepage design:

My tutor was worried about the information being left aligned underneath the logo and animating in. She suggested I should move the information up and incorporate it into the logo somehow. I was all for this and thought it was a good idea but after having a play around for a while I realised that nothing worked as well as how I had it. I had this exactly as it is in my mind from the outset of the project. I wanted there to be a central logo design that was big and impactful. I wanted that to be the first thing you see when you enter the site.

I think it creates a story and engages the audience. It is almost like reading a book or watching a film. I wanted there to be a large central, vibrant icon that draws the eye and asks a question. The viewer will wonder what the site is for and hopefully be intrigued the by the art style and subject matter of the image. Then when they engage with the page or after a very short time the information animates in. This attracts the eye and makes it so that the viewer can then read information about what it is, where it is and when it is. Then as they scroll down they get more and more information and more ideas of what to look at next.

I think that this is a good way of encouraging interaction/participation and that will more often than not cause the viewer to be more interested in what they are looking at and actually take in the information. All of these factors and principles however, do not impede on the feel and usability of the site though. They are subtle effects that do not get in the way of the user and hamper their journey through the site. The only effect they have is a positive one.

I really strongly believe in my decisions for the homepage and although they are not popular opinion and my tutor may not a agree I really think that they are exactly how they should be. My site is for quite a niche event. It isn't something big and wide reaching it is for a tight knit community of people who are passionate about music and so I feel that gives me more creative freedom and artistic liberty to toy with the norm and test the boundaries of what a homepage should be. I think that my design engages the user and forces them, very lightly and subconsciously, into interaction and play.

I know it may seem like I'm making a mountain of a molehill but I really do believe that all of this is the strongest choice that I can make for the design and function of my homepage. I think that chances are people will know at least the main themes of my site either before they come because of a google search or at the very least by the logo on the homepage and so the creative choices I have made with the text and lack of in your fact call to action is justified and makes the page work better as a whole. Now I might be wrong but I really believe that I'm not.
