Change in Branding

I had a chat with one of my tutors the other day and she mentioned that she wasn't keen on the logo I had created and the colours I put them with. She thought that a few tweaks and a bit of experimentation would return better results. Initially I didn't act on this advice, I was really happy with the logo and loved the colour scheme as it really stood out:

This is how the logo was initially. I liked it. When it came time to incorporate it into the site though it wasn't quite right. I really liked the colours together but when it became part of a bigger design it ceased to work. It was too tricky to have enough yellow throughout the page to justify the logo being yellow. I realised I needed to go with something more subdued and contrasted against the blue. I am still set on having blue as a background colour as it is really impactful. I played in Illustrator for a little while and quickly came up with this:

I really like this. It is just utter simplicity and yet packs a punch, making a statement. It also accidentally opened up a whole new idea for the site as a whole. It introduced a three colour scheme. There was the blue, the dark grey and the white. This gave me the idea to create bands. This would separate the content into easy to identify partitions and allow for quicker, easier navigation across each page.

Once this logo was on the page I designed the rest of the home page. Something still wasn't right for me. It didn't look enough like a logo for a guitar exposition. I then went back into Illustrator and had a bit more of a play and created a character to stand atop the logo:

This was just a quick mockup at first just made quickly with the pen tool. But I zoomed out and thought that it was perfect. It didn't touch it again and whacked it straight into the home page. I love the jagged, sharp, vector style. It cuts straight through the blue background. It looks really vivid and clean and makes for a perfect first page. It draws the eye completely and instantly shows the viewer what the site and indeed event is about. This is the logo in situ on the site:

It works almost as a poster on the homepage and I think that it is exactly what was required for this site. I think that it is perfect and also opened up a new avenue to explore. I wanted each major page to have a similarly styled image to open the page as it were. I think that it adds a little quirkiness to the site as a whole and helps to engage viewers with a little more vibrance and interest.
